iMovie

One of those rare applications that actually changes people's lives, iMovie has single-handedly made cinematographers out of parents, grandparents, students, teachers, small business owners and many other people who, before iMovie, never imagined themselves producing a movie. In this one-day class we'll make a video complete with titles, transitions, special effects, music, narration and credits. Then we will use iDVD to produce a DVD.

ntroduction to Bioinformatics

Saturday Science Showcase

Have you wondered how scientists are tracking bird flu? Why we are so similar genetically, but so different in appearance? How biologists can take sequences of DNA, and determine what genes it comes from, or what proteins it might code for? Or how drug companies determine what proteins are important in diseases, and how to develop effective medicines. This 'casual workshop' is an introduction to bioinformatics and NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), including a 'hands-on tour' of key bioinformatics websites, focusing on the use of bioinformatics databases, tools, and methods. You'll learn to use BLAST, multiple sequence alignment, genome databases, simple protein modeling tools, and online scientific journals. You'll see how scientists are watching bird flu mutate, and how we have learned that the 'Spanish influenza' of 1918 was actually an avian flu. All you need is an interest in technology and some background in biology. And don't shy away if your biology was over 25 years ago - come and learn about how information technology and biology are working together.

Introduction to Adobe Premiere Elements

Adobe's new video editing software, Premiere Elements, is the perfect digital video application for teachers and students who want to create high quality videos for CD or Web publication. In this course you will learn to import video and photos into Premiere Elements and edit them to create short digital videos. Blogs, RSS, and podcasting have all received a lot of publicity in the popular press recently. When I ask students or faculty about their use of these technologies, few have tried them or even know about them! Like many emerging technologies, the expectations are that everyone is just supposed to know all about them, even without training or learning opportunities. This class will explain, demonstrate and provide hands-on experience with each of these technologies. At the end of the class, participants will have their own weblog and first-hand knowledge and understanding of the power of RSS when used to gather and disseminate knowledge and information. Using sound-editing software, students will also create their own podcast and upload it to the web (iPod not necessary).

This workshop will cover all the key features of InDesign you'll need to create attractive, professional and reusable page layouts for all types of printed and electronic classroom material including yearbooks school newspapers, course work books, , newsletters, articles, lecture materials, homework assignments posters web pages and much more. We will create a print-ready, web ready and PDF version of a classroom publication. Resource material will be provided. You may also bring any digital images and text that you wish to use in a project you are presently working on. Conversational Spanish for those working with parents or students whose primary language is Spanish. Introduction to Technology for Educators CIS 50A.09
Introduction to the computer and its uses is equivalent to San Jose State University's EDIT122, and the units will transfer. SJSU now requires this course as a prerequisite for their teacher credential programs. It is a perfect course for any educator wishing to gain a basic understanding of how to effectively use the computer for both school and personal use. You will learn to use word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphics and Web page creation software. You will also learn file management, simple software and hardware configuration and troubleshooting as well as how to use email, an Internet browser, and various search engines. The course includes a discussion of software applications for educational use, and the role of the computer and Internet in the educational setting. This is a "must take" introduction to the computer for all educators who want and need basic computer skills. This class meets the Level 1 CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing Technology Proficiencies for teacher certification.

Integrating Technology Lab LINC 255.01

This course is for educators who need an "open lab" with help and support type environment go help with their other courses, or to support and extend their learning. Teachers who have assignments for other classes they are taking (LINC, San Jose State, etc.) or who need one on one support for a project they are doing with their students should take this class. Specific tutorials on Inspiration,M.S. Word and PowerPoint will help support and extend your learning. In this class teachers can pick up pointers about the particular application, and bring their own projects to work on in a supportive environment.

You will not only learn to create a project you can use with your students, but you will also learn how to assess you project and the integration of technology into your curriculum. This class supports a constructionist learning environment.

Description:

We are often asked, "Which multimedia application should I use?"
Have you ever wondered or asked which multimedia application is best for the project you want to do with your students? This online course is a MUST for anyone doing using multimedia with their students. It will give you a knowledgeable overview of the pros and cons of several software applications. It includes choosing applications that would make the students go more in depth in content and develop enduring understanding of academic content. You will examine projects and which applications were used. Applications such as Inspiration, Photoshop, MovieWorks, HyperStudio, PowerPoint, and Creator will be examined and explored. The course is not meant to be an in depth training on the applications, but more about what one can do with those applications in the K-12 classroom. During the face-to-face session you will see student projects completed in a variety of software applications, and get the opportunity to sample hands-on several software applications.

LINC 260 (1 unit) ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES FOR TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION FOR EDUCATORS (At the KCI)

This course will focus on critical thinking about technology in education. Computers were not the first technology and they won't be the last. For millennia, technology has been changing how we work, what we study, and what choices we can make. How can we put all technology into context so our students can make the best choices for themselves, their communities, and our environment? That context is social studies, science, mathematics, and English language arts. We follow the entrancing thread of technology through the core content areas (with connections to California state standards) to the critical thinking skills our society will need in a rapidly changing future. This is technological literacy (understanding and evaluating technology), which complements technological competency (knowing how to operate specific tools). A bonus for teachers: unlike teaching how to use the latest software, technological literacy leverages your educational and life experiences, making it easier to be an "expert." The downloadable curriculum with student workbooks (consumable) has been tested in middle school classrooms (and even adapted to a college classroom).

Description:

This course is will review current issues and legislation in computer ethics, child safety on the Internet and cyberlaw. This course will also cover validity of Internet resources.

Basic conversational Spanish for those working with parents or students whose primary language is Spanish. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to 'Surf the Genome'? This hands-on tour of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) will introduce you to bioinformatics databases, tools, and methods of using computers to investigate biology. You will learn how to use BLAST, do a multiple sequence alignment, search genome databases, use simple protein
modeling tools, and search online scientific journals. Course is built on problem centered learning, with exercises based on real-world problems, including HIV, SARS, and Avian flu. Assumes a biology course in recent memory, but no special computer skills. High school teachers are encouraged to bring an 11th or 12th grade student. This is an important MUST TAKE class for anyone who uses computers in the classroom or who makes decisions about the use of computers in schools. How can we put all technology into context so our students can make the best choices for themselves, their communities, and our environment? That context is social studies, science, mathematics, and English language arts. We follow the entrancing thread of technology through the core content areas (with connections to California state standards) to the critical thinking skills our society will need in a rapidly changing future. This is technological literacy (understanding and evaluating technology), which complements technological competency (knowing how to operate specific tools). A bonus for teachers: unlike teaching how to use the latest software, technological literacy leverages your educational and life experiences, making it easier to be an "expert." The downloadable curriculum with student workbooks (consumable) has been tested in middle school classrooms (and even adapted to a college classroom).

The tuition for each of these classes is $8.50 for the 1/2 unit plus (if you've not already registered for another Spring Quarter class) $11 for the one time per quarter registration fee. Register on line

This course will explore research-based reading strategies for middle school. LINC 255.01 Integrating Technology Lab (Fridays, April 21 through May 26) 4:00-6:00 p.m. 1 unit
This course is for ANYONE who needs an "open lab" with help and support type environment go help with their other courses, or to support and extend their learning. People who have assignments for other classes they are taking (LINC-FastTech, San Jose State, Foothill College classes etc.) or who need one on one support for a project they are doing. In this class teachers can pick up pointers about the particular application. you can bring your own projects to work on in a supportive environment.

LINC 228.01 Video: Digital Storytelling (Saturdays, April 22 & 29) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1 unit
This two day course will give you the video production basics including video crew roles, segments shooting, camera terminology and shot set-ups. You will create a group documentary and PAS/Commercial using iMovie. Walk away with a 30 second demonstration. No camera or editing experience necessary. (The "nuts and bolts" of video production taught by a TV producer and now video broadcast teacher will help you and your students to produce fast and high quality video production.) (If you want to bring a camera and tripod, do so, but
it's not necessary.)

LINC 206.01 Blogging, RSS & Podcasting (Mondays 4/24 - 5/8) 1-4:30 p.m. 1 unit
Blogs, RSS, and podcasting have all received a lot of publicity in the popular press recently. When I ask students or faculty about their use of these technologies, few have tried them or even know about them! Like many emerging technologies, the expectations are that everyone is just supposed to know all about them, even without training or learning opportunities. This class will explain, demonstrate and provide hands-on experience with each of these technologies. At the end of the class, participants will have their own weblog and first-hand knowledge and understanding of the power of RSS when used to gather and disseminate knowledge and information. Using sound-editing software, students will also create their own podcast and upload it to the web (iPod not necessary).

LINC 243S.01 Stagecast Creator (Sat. April 29) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1/2 unit
In this class you will learn to use Stagecast Creator, an award-winning point-and-click programming tool, in the classroom. This course will explore research-based reading strategies for middle school. Learn about research on reading and the adolescent learner, the workshop model of instruction in a "50 minute world", and new literacies students of today are faced with, among other topics. We know that students who do not learn to read will have difficulty mastering academic content; therefore it is imperative to continue teaching students to read as they move through middle school. Learning to read and mastering reading is a continuous process through adulthood, especially in this day where our text structures, resources, and genres have changed. LINC 214.01W Integrating Technology Projects Using Online Collaboration Tools (April 12 - May 24) 2 units

Learn how to use Excel to create classroom rosters and gradesheets. You will learn how to use Excel's automated calendar ability to create attendance sheets and create class rosters from lists of student names. Excel will automatically average grades and sum points for you, and its, Fill Handle can be used to automatically copy an equivalent formula across all relevant columns and rows. You will learn how to become an expert with all of these features. In addition, you will learn how to use Excel's VLOOKUP function to assign letter grades, based on your own grade tables of numerical or percentage scores. Finally, you will learn how to use Conditional Formatting to automatically color-code and highlight students' scores within certain numerical ranges of scores. Familiarity with beginning level of Excel is recommended (eg. LINC 271.S01, or any introductory Excel experience).

Course Description: Looking for ways to use Excel in ways other than spreadsheets? This class will introduce the basic features, provide practice, and give ideas on creating interactive learning activities using Excel. They can be used for practice of basic skills, alternative assessment strategies, and a creative way to integrate technology across the curriculum.

The projects created can be used as templates to design your own Excel based learning activities that meet the specific needs of your students. Resources for creating other classroom activities using Excel will be explored. No knowledge of Excel is needed, but previous experience with the application would be helpful.
