Bioinformatics at KCI on June 10

LINC 265S.01 Introduction to Bioinformatics (Saturday June 10)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to 'Surf the Genome'? This hands-on tour of NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) will introduce you to bioinformatics databases, tools, and methods of using computers to investigate biology. You will learn how to use BLAST, do a multiple sequence alignment, search genome databases, use simple protein
modeling tools, and search online scientific journals. Course is built on problem centered learning, with exercises based on real-world problems, including HIV, SARS, and Avian flu. Assumes a biology course in recent memory, but no special computer skills. High school teachers are encouraged to bring an 11th or 12th grade student. High School students need a High School Student form.
