Foothill College's Spring Quarter begins on April 10. We have some fantastic Spring Quarter classes scheduled. Classes are for anyone. LINC 208.02 (LINC 266.01) Conversational Spanish Using Online Resources (Wednesdays April 12 - June 28) 5:00-8:00 p.m. and online 3 units
This is a hybrid course (face-to-face and online) that uses the Internet and interactive technology to learn basic conversational Spanish. It is a great course for those working with parents or students whose primary language is Spanish or for anyone who needs basic conversation Spanish skills for work or travel. This course will include strategies for working with ELL populations while looking at various Hispanic cultures. Participants will review online resources, learn basic grammar concepts and role-play different situations. The following skills will be put into practice: listening, speaking, reading, writing and composing. The course is appropriate for ANYONE wanting to improve his/her conversational Spanish skills.
CIS 50A.09 Introduction to Technology (Thursdays April 13 through June 29) 4:00-7:00 p.m. --4 units
This course is equivalent to San Jose State University's EDIT 122. It meets the Level One requirements for entry into the SJSU Teacher Credentialling program and for the CA Provisionary Credential. It is the perfect course for ANYONE want to learn to use the computer. You will learn to use word processing, spreadsheet, database, and graphics and Web page creation software. You will also learn file management, simple software and hardware configuration and troubleshooting as well as how to use email, an Internet browser, and various search engines.
LINC 209S.01 Beginning DreamWeaver (Saturday, April 15) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1/2 unit
Learn how easy it can be to create simple web pages using this powerful webpage editor. We'll cover basics, links, tables, layers and simple rollovers.
LINC 255.01 Integrating Technology Lab (Fridays, April 21 through May 26) 4:00-6:00 p.m. 1 unit
This course is for ANYONE who needs an "open lab" with help and support type environment go help with their other courses, or to support and extend their learning. People who have assignments for other classes they are taking (LINC-FastTech, San Jose State, Foothill College classes etc.) or who need one on one support for a project they are doing. In this class teachers can pick up pointers about the particular application. you can bring your own projects to work on in a supportive environment.
LINC 228.01 Video: Digital Storytelling (Saturdays, April 22 & 29) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1 unit
This two day course will give you the video production basics including video crew roles, segments shooting, camera terminology and shot set-ups. You will create a group documentary and PAS/Commercial using iMovie. Walk away with a 30 second demonstration. No camera or editing experience necessary. (The "nuts and bolts" of video production taught by a TV producer and now video broadcast teacher will help you and your students to produce fast and high quality video production.) (If you want to bring a camera and tripod, do so, but
it's not necessary.)
LINC 206.01 Blogging, RSS & Podcasting (Mondays 4/24 - 5/8) 1-4:30 p.m. 1 unit
Blogs, RSS, and podcasting have all received a lot of publicity in the popular press recently. When I ask students or faculty about their use of these technologies, few have tried them or even know about them! Like many emerging technologies, the expectations are that everyone is just supposed to know all about them, even without training or learning opportunities. This class will explain, demonstrate and provide hands-on experience with each of these technologies. At the end of the class, participants will have their own weblog and first-hand knowledge and understanding of the power of RSS when used to gather and disseminate knowledge and information. Using sound-editing software, students will also create their own podcast and upload it to the web (iPod not necessary).
LINC 243S.01 Stagecast Creator (Sat. April 29) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1/2 unit
In this class you will learn to use Stagecast Creator, an award-winning point-and-click programming tool, in the classroom. Creator gives you and your students the power to create lively interactive simulations for math, reading, science and more. Creator can be used for any subject, for any grade level, by both boys and girls, and by students with a wide variety of learning styles.
LINC 209.01 DreamWeaver with Flash Learning Objects (Saturdays April 29 & May 6) 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 1 unit
This course teaches the student how to create a e-Learning site that incorporates quizzes, simulations, and learning games using Macromedia CourseBuilder and a learning site created using Dreamweaver software. The learner will also create an interface for a e-Learning site using Macromedia's Fireworks software. The objective of the course is to introduce the educator to computer aided instruction and its application in the classroom.

LINC 208.01W Searching and Researching the Internet (April 12 - May 24) 2 units
Optional face-to-face introductory class will be held on Saturday, April 15, 1-4 p.m. in room 4006 at the KCI, Foothill College. Attendance is not required, but if this is your first online class, you may want to join us for tips and tricks and to meet the instructor. Are you a Web surfer who would like to make more efficient use of the Internet? This is an intermediate to advanced course for teachers and administrators who already used the Internet for personal research and in their classrooms and who are looking for ways to better integrate the Internet into their curriculum. The emphasis will be on using advanced search techniques that incorporate critical thinking, essential questions, and inquiry based learning in order to narrow searches, explore search engines, evaluate Web sites, and understand copyright and citation documentation. LINC 225.02W Middle School Reading Strategies (April 12 - May 24) 2 units
This course will explore research-based reading strategies for middle school. Learn about research on reading and the adolescent learner, the workshop model of instruction in a "50 minute world", and new literacies students of today are faced with, among other topics. Many middle school teachers think of themselves as content experts. We know that students who do not learn to read will have difficulty mastering academic content; therefore it is imperative to continue teaching students to read as they move through middle school. Learning to read and mastering reading is a continuous process through adulthood, especially in this day where our text structures, resources, and genres have changed. LINC 214.01W Integrating Technology Projects Using Online Collaboration Tools (April 12 - May 24) 2 units
Optional face-to-face introductory class will be held on Saturday, April 15, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. in room 4008 at the KCI, Foothill College. Attendance is not required, but if this is your first online class, you may want to join us for tips and tricks and to meet the instructor. Collaboration is a fundamental asic skill of learning and work in the 21st century. This course will explore some different kinds of collaborative technologies using the Internet and web--and how these can be integrated with curriculum and student projects to help provide students with experience n both effective communication and learning using new media, as well as providing teachers tools for planning and assessing collaborative student projects. Two special web-based "Collaboratories' will be used as examples: Acme Animation Online, a global (web-based) learning community (http://www.acmeanimation.org), and the Bay Area Science (Museum) Education Collaboratory (http://www.designworlds, com/Hewlett/BA_ScienceCollab/index.html), a dynamic resource for parents and teachers who want to use science-technology museum resources for better science learning.
LINC 225.01W Integrating Technology into a Standards-Based Curriculum (April 12 - May 24) 2 units
Optional face-to-face introductory class will be held on Saturday, April 15, 1 -4 p.m. in room 4008 at the KCI, Foothill College. Attendance is not required, but if this is your first online class, you may want to join us for tips and tricks and to meet the instructor. You've got the technology, now what do you do with it? How can you use the computers in your school or classroom to enhance student learning? Learn to integrate a student centered technology project based on the California Content Standards, the ISTE Technology Standards, and the new California Technology Standards for teacher certification into you curriculum. You will not only learn to create a project you can use with your students, but you will also learn how to assess you project and the integration of technology into your curriculum. This class supports a constructionist learning environment.

This course provides a goal and focus for Web searching which require students to transform information into a new form. WebQuests are powerfully motivating, inquiry oriented learning opportunities for students. Explore existing WebQuests and learn a step-by-step approach to writing your own.

This workshop will guide you through a set of simple projects that will teach you digital imaging basics - types of digital images, how to work with them using Photoshop's painting and selecting tools, how to work with layers, adjust colors, create simple and seamless collages and touch-up old photographs.

LINC 271S.03Excel: Rosters & Grades (Saturday, April 22) Units: 1/2 Time: 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Learn how to use Excel to create classroom rosters and gradesheets. You will learn how to use Excel's automated calendar ability to create attendance sheets and create class rosters from lists of student names. Excel will automatically average grades and sum points for you, and its, Fill Handle can be used to automatically copy an equivalent formula across all relevant columns and rows. You will learn how to become an expert with all of these features. In addition, you will learn how to use Excel's VLOOKUP function to assign letter grades, based on your own grade tables of numerical or percentage scores. Finally, you will learn how to use Conditional Formatting to automatically color-code and highlight students' scores within certain numerical ranges of scores. Familiarity with beginning level of Excel is recommended (eg. LINC 271.S01, or any introductory Excel experience).
