Alice Programming for Educators LINC 299.01
Want to get your students interested in programming and make it fun at the same time? And better yet, the software is FREE. Alice Programming for Educators will teach you to program a computer, but uses a completely different and more enjoyable approach which allows students to drag-and-drop words in a direct manipulation interface rather than having to correctly type commands according to obscure rules of syntax. In addition, Alice reifies object-based programming by providing animated, on-screen 3D objects. Global Greetings! If you've been looking for new ways to engage your students in collaborative problem solving, here's a unique opportunity to do just that. Starting today, we're inviting educators to join us in new initiative called the Global Warming Student Speakout, online at http://www.google.com/educators/globalwarming.html. The project, co-presented with Google Education, gives students a chance to collectively brainstorm strategies for fighting global warming -- and have their ideas published in a full-page ad in The Washington Post. We hope this project, which should take 1-2 days to complete, helps you test the waters with software for online collaboration - and helps your students learn about the environment and civic participation. It works like this: 1) Sign up - and start brainstorming. Over the next week, you can sign up for a Google Docs & Spreadsheets account at http://docs.google.com, then initiate a classroom brainstorming session. You'll be able to create a Google document to "share" with your students - allowing each student to add new ideas at any time, from any computer. To confirm your participation, you'll need to add Google to your list of collaborators by November 2nd 2006. 2) Share your ideas with us. Once you sign up for an account and follow the instructions for becoming a participant in the project, you'll receive an email with a link to a Google spreadsheet where you can enter the very best ideas your students have brainstormed. Your spreadsheet must be filled out by November 3rd 2006. 3) See the best ideas appear online and in The Washington Post. Here's where we come in. After reviewing the spreadsheets, Global SchoolNet will choose the top 50 ideas, and Google will publish the list in an ad that will appear online and in a November issue of The Washington Post (we'll send participants the date as soon as we have it). We'll also include the name of every school that participates, so regardless of whether their ideas are published, your students will be credited for their work. Ready to join the project? Visit the Global Warming Student Speakout site and instructions page for further details: Global Warming Student Speakout: http://www.google.com/educators/globalwarming.html Instructions page: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=ajdmjhxsmnzv_10dkqwh9&revision=_latest On behalf of Global SchoolNet and Google Education -- Good luck -- and have fun!
