ntroduction to Bioinformatics Saturday Science Showcase
Have you wondered how scientists are tracking bird flu? Why we are so similar genetically, but so different in appearance? How biologists can take sequences of DNA, and determine what genes it comes from, or what proteins it might code for? Or how drug companies determine what proteins are important in diseases, and how to develop effective medicines. This 'casual workshop' is an introduction to bioinformatics and NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), including a 'hands-on tour' of key bioinformatics websites, focusing on the use of bioinformatics databases, tools, and methods. You'll learn to use BLAST, multiple sequence alignment, genome databases, simple protein modeling tools, and online scientific journals. You'll see how scientists are watching bird flu mutate, and how we have learned that the 'Spanish influenza' of 1918 was actually an avian flu. All you need is an interest in technology and some background in biology. And don't shy away if your biology was over 25 years ago - come and learn about how information technology and biology are working together.

Are you interested in Global Warming?

Bob Cormia is hosting another

Free "Saturday Show Case" Global Warming (no credit) Class Dates: Saturday October 28 Units: Free, no-credit Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Class location: Room 4008 (PC lab) Krause Center for Innovation, Foothill College 12345 El Monte Rd. If this is a topic of interest to you, you might also be interested in the following information from Global Schoolnet:

Global Greetings! If you've been looking for new ways to engage your students in collaborative problem solving, here's a unique opportunity to do just that. Starting today, we're inviting educators to join us in new initiative called the Global Warming Student Speakout, online at http://www.google.com/educators/globalwarming.html. The project, co-presented with Google Education, gives students a chance to collectively brainstorm strategies for fighting global warming -- and have their ideas published in a full-page ad in The Washington Post. We hope this project, which should take 1-2 days to complete, helps you test the waters with software for online collaboration - and helps your students learn about the environment and civic participation. It works like this: 1) Sign up - and start brainstorming. Over the next week, you can sign up for a Google Docs & Spreadsheets account at http://docs.google.com, then initiate a classroom brainstorming session. You'll be able to create a Google document to "share" with your students - allowing each student to add new ideas at any time, from any computer. To confirm your participation, you'll need to add Google to your list of collaborators by November 2nd 2006. 2) Share your ideas with us. Once you sign up for an account and follow the instructions for becoming a participant in the project, you'll receive an email with a link to a Google spreadsheet where you can enter the very best ideas your students have brainstormed. Your spreadsheet must be filled out by November 3rd 2006. 3) See the best ideas appear online and in The Washington Post. Here's where we come in. After reviewing the spreadsheets, Global SchoolNet will choose the top 50 ideas, and Google will publish the list in an ad that will appear online and in a November issue of The Washington Post (we'll send participants the date as soon as we have it). We'll also include the name of every school that participates, so regardless of whether their ideas are published, your students will be credited for their work. Ready to join the project? Visit the Global Warming Student Speakout site and instructions page for further details: Global Warming Student Speakout: http://www.google.com/educators/globalwarming.html Instructions page: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=ajdmjhxsmnzv_10dkqwh9&revision=_latest On behalf of Global SchoolNet and Google Education -- Good luck -- and have fun! This class will explain, demonstrate and provide hands-on experience with each of these technologies. At the end of the class, participants will have their own weblog and first-hand knowledge and understanding of the power of RSS when used to gather and disseminate knowledge and information. Using sound-editing software, students will also create their own podcast and upload it to the web (iPod not necessary).
